I
arrived at Vieira's on a weeknight feeling slightly
underdressed and was treated lake a queen. For no special
reason I was shown to a table draped in a white tablecloth.
My waitress lit the small oil lamp just for me. Casual is
the dress code but more Sunday brunch casual. A coat and
tie would not be out of place. The small intimate dining
room with low lighting and beautiful music was decorated in
a Tuscan inspired motif. The exposed wooden beams gave
warmth to what I imagine (considering the outside of the
building) must have been a very plain space in its former
life. The atmosphere called for wine and I chose a glass of Chardonnay that had been listed on the feature board. The wine list though not extensive is well rounded and included some Virginia vintages. The finest wines are offered by the bottle so if you require only a glass I suggest ordering from the featured wines of the evening. What followed was a delight for my senses. The Herbed Shrimp soup was light yet amazingly hearty. Have you ever had perfectly cooked carrots? Not to draw attention away from the excellent Salmon and capers but the carrots were ... the best. The menu with its many tempting dishes provides something for every taste. Most intriguing were the Brazilian selections. As well as Ostrich dishes there are pasta, poultry, veal, beef and seafood selections. The average entree is about $15.00. As a party was departing one lady could be overheard telling another table about "the best Ribeye I've had in years" If your small children are not used to fine dining then consider a babysitter. But if your little ones are old pros at dining out Vieira's has a children's menu that includes reasonable priced chicken tenders and pasta. When the waitress didn't suggest dessert, I was initially dismayed but then smiled at the fact that one hadn't been pushing on me. I asked about the dessert offerings and was pleased with my selection. The "Black and White" consist of cheesecake and a chocolate truffle that was creamy and smooth. The whipped cream and maraschino cherry seemed a bit unnecessary and gave me the impression that the chef was not confident in his presentation. Every bite was delicious so I have no criticism, only a vote for greater confidence. In a past column I reviewed a restaurant (if you're a fan of this magazine you know which one I'm talking about) and stated that establishment (although a good value) was definitely not a place your would take the one you love for your anniversary. The management was not pleased. Well, it is now my honor to say that I recommend Vieira's for the next special dinner. You'll never find a rating attached to this column-please make up your own mind and let your own experience by your guide-never let someone's star of half a star influence you-you could miss out on the perfect meal for the next moment in your life. Note: Vieira's Restaurant was located on Rt 122 in Burnt Chimney, Virginia at the time of this publication... |
